Re-Cultural Heritage: Eisriesenwelt

Within the scope of our project, today we are introducing you to Austria’s fascinating cultural heritage Eisriesenwelt!

Eisriesenwelt, located in Werfen, Austria, is the largest ice cave in the world, spanning over 42 kilometers. This natural wonder is renowned for its stunning ice formations and frozen stalactites that create a mesmerizing spectacle. The cave’s name translates to “World of the Ice Giants” in English.

The cave was discovered in 1879 and has since become a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the globe. Guided tours take visitors through a portion of the cave, showcasing its incredible ice sculptures and unique geological features.

Eisriesenwelt is a labyrinth of narrow passages, vast caverns, and frozen galleries, formed by a combination of ice and limestone. The temperature inside the cave remains cold year-round, making it a chilly yet fascinating experience for explorers.

One of the highlights of the cave is the Great Ice Embankment, a massive ice formation that stretches over 30 meters high. Another impressive feature is the Hymir’s Castle, an ethereal ice palace with delicate icicles hanging from the ceiling.

Due to its delicate nature and to preserve the natural beauty of the cave, access is limited to guided tours, which usually last for about an hour and a half. The cave is open to visitors during the summer months, from May to October, providing a truly extraordinary and unforgettable adventure into the heart of a frozen wonderland.
